by Brian Steptoe
Nearly all fairground artists and carvers today are self-taught and yet produce highly attractive decor and elaborately carved animals. Makers and restorers of traditional fair organs build on the techniques established by French makers in the late 19th century. Meeting the continued call for these time-consuming skills at the turn of the 20th century is dependent on the small number of individuals who restore and operate traditional rides, particularly merry-go-rounds, referred to as gallopers in the Uk and carousels in America, Europe and elsewhere. In North America volunteer-led initiatives and individual enthusiast investments play a role in keeping the remaining carousels alive and in active use. This book is a celebration of the skills of these 'roundabout people' .
